Father’s Day over the weekend had me thinking about my dad. He has been gone over 30 years now, and only lived to the age of 67. He had a hard life.
Anyone familiar with the “Heartland” television series might have an appreciation for the type of life he lived, and the kind of culture I grew up in. My dad was a lifelong farmer and rancher in the plains of southwestern South Dakota. Many of the same types of family drama that happened in the Heartland series, was a familiar part of our family story as well, . . except . , not as much about horses for us. I was more interested in the vehicles rather than the horses (there is a Heartland episode that addresses that also).
The years have gone by now, my grandfather has been gone for 50 years, my dad for over 30, and the farm sold 10 years ago. Now all just part of my memories. I love watching the Heartland television series, it brings back so many memories of my past. I think it’s one of the best shows of all time.
Darrell D. Dirks , my dad.
